April has been a busy month for me so far from traveling to getting the worst cold I have had all year. But the good news is that I have had time to take a break from blogging to enjoy some great reads. Below I have listed some pretty awesome books that I have read/will be reading this month. I hope you enjoy!
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
This book is a must-read for everyone! It is so eye-opening and really helps to put your life into perspective.
This book is about a sheepherder who travels the world in search of new wonders. He starts experiencing dreams that cause him to question his current path.
In his next stop, at the town where his crush lives, he meets an old man who interprets his dreams. He is told that he must embark on a quest for treasure. This treasure will change his life. What happens on his journey, you will have to read to find out!
This book is essential for life. There are so many life lessons that Paulo Coelho has hidden beneath the metaphors and captivatingly written text. If you are on a journey toward achieving your dreams, this is a perfect book to help you gain the courage to keep making your dreams become reality.
Brave Enough Cheryl Strayed
Have you read Cheryl Strayed's Wild? Well if you haven't you should read that as well! But Brave Enough is the best "poetry" book to make you realize that you are just that: brave enough.
I would categorize this book as poetry, but it is filled with more quotes and thoughts than actual poems. But all the pages are centered around some incredible universal themes that she experienced throughout her life: love, compassion, forgiveness, and endurance.
If you need some extra encouragement for this month, then please check out Brave Enough.
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See
This is my fiction book for the month. I read this book on the plane while I was heading to my mini-family reunion. This book took me on a journey through love, heartbreak, and strength. Lisa See is an amazing storyteller and I have fallen more in love with her through each book I read.
Shanghai Girls is a story about two sisters who were raised in wealth, and with an unexpected turn of fate became poor and forced into an arranged marriage to save their family. This book takes place during the Sino-Japanese war between 1937 to 1945. This war forced the sisters to flee on a tragic journey to America to meet their husbands.
Through this journey, they were faced with many heartbreaking events, and even experiencing new life in wake of tragedy. Upon arriving in America, they were forced to integrate into a new family and had to rely on each other to survive. The book ends with the sisters continuing to lean on each other as they have to go on another trying journey to save someone they love.
If you love period pieces about strength and courage, then this book is for you. I love reading about stories that feature women as the main character, especially when I get to see their inner-conflict and personal transformation.
What books are you reading this month?
Let me know what book you are loving, I would love to add them to my reading list for May.
